Wildfires Threaten Greece’s Iconic Preveli Palm Beach
Raging wildfires on the Greek island of Crete are threatening to engulf the iconic Preveli Palm Beach in flames.
Preveli Palm Beach under threat from wildfires
Massive wildfires in the Rethymno region on the island of Crete are threatening one of the most iconic beaches in Greece.
Preveli Beach, located on the southern coast of Crete along the shores of the Libyan Sea, is famous for its palm groves surrounding a turquoise river that flows into a lagoon and the sea.
According to local newspaper Nea Kriti, a part of the Preveli palm forest has been engulfed by the wildfire flames.
Reportedly, only a small part of the upper section of the palm forest has caught fire, rather than the area directly near the beach, although the exact extent of the damage remains difficult to verify at the moment.

Fake social media reports
On social media, multiple reports claimed that the palm grove of Preveli Beach had burned down completely.
However, locals living in the mountainous and sparsely populated southern part of Crete were quick to dismiss these rumours.
Many pictures circulating on social media showing a burned-down Preveli Beach have been identified as either AI-generated fakes or old images from 2010, when more than 70% of the palm forest was destroyed in a major fire.

About the Cretan wildfires
Even though most of Preveli Beach and its palm forest has been spared from the wildfires for the time being, it does not mean the situation on the ground is not serious.
Kathimerini, one of Greece’s leading newspapers, reported that 4,500 hectares (11,250 acres) of land in the wider Preveli area have burned down.
Two firefighters have already died while trying to combat the wildfires on Crete.
Strong winds and challenging mountainous terrain are making firefighting efforts extremely difficult.
Due to the high winds, aerial firefighting aircraft have been unable to join the efforts to combat the flames.
Despite the difficulties in combating the fires, firefighters managed to save the Holy Monastery of Preveli, which overlooks the Libyan Sea from its commanding mountainside position.

Wildfires at other European travel destinations
Europe has been hit hard by wildfires this summer.
Besides Crete, the region of Attica and the island of Paros have also been battling major fires.
Other countries severely affected by wildfires include Spain and France, where a large fire is still raging in the south-western region of Aquitaine, near Bordeaux.
Investigations into the wildfires have been launched in all affected countries.
A wide variety of factors are believed to have contributed to the wildfires, with some attributed to the unusually hot and dry summer weather, while others may have been caused by unsecured electricity cables or exacerbated by poor land management.
Some fires have also been attributed to arson or to locals and tourists being careless with open fires or throwing cigarette butts out of car windows.

Conclusion
A major wildfire currently raging in southern Crete is threatening to engulf the iconic Preveli Beach and its palm grove in flames.
Although social media reports falsely claimed that the entire palm grove had burned down, only part of it has been affected so far, with firefighters managing to contain the fires and save the nearby monastery.
However, the situation remains critical, as strong winds are making firefighting operations difficult, particularly the deployment of firefighting aircraft.
A sliver of hope for Preveli is that palm forests generally recover quickly after wildfires, as palm trees are highly resilient and can survive such fires thanks to their protected inner core.
However, that offers little consolation to the locals who have seen their homes go up in flames or to the families of the firefighters who lost their lives.
