Guide: How to Buy a Deutschland Ticket for €1.93 per Day
The monthly Deutschland Ticket, which grants unlimited travel on trains and public transport across Germany, is now also available per day for €1.93.
What is a Deutschland ticket?
The Deutschland Ticket, or D-Ticket, is a transport pass offering unlimited travel on Germany’s regional and local trains, as well as the bus, tram, and metro.
The Deutschland Ticket is normally sold as a monthly subscription, and although the price increased from €49 to €58 per month at the beginning of 2025, it is still unbeatable value.
It’s not only an amazing deal for German commuters, but also for tourists wanting to explore Germany, as the cost of a Deutschland Ticket is usually much cheaper than regular tickets if you visit two or three different destinations on your trip.

Monthly subscription
For foreign tourists, the only frustrating aspect of the Deutschland Ticket was its design as a monthly pass, which can feel unnecessary when visiting Germany for just a week.
Let’s say, for example, that you are visiting Germany next month from 17 to 23 February.
In this case, you would buy a Deutschland Ticket for the month of February, even if you only use the pass for a single week.
If you visit Germany for the last week of February and the first week of March, you can’t buy just a single Deutschland Ticket, as they are only valid per calendar month, meaning you must buy one for the full month of February and another for March to cover those two weeks.
Depending on where you buy your ticket online, you must be careful to purchase the Deutschland Ticket for the single month of February and not as a subscription (which is the default), as it would then automatically extend for another month on the 1st of March if you don’t cancel it.
You can buy the Deutschland Ticket from nearly every national, regional, or local transport operator, including Deutsche Bahn (German Railways).
However, note that this involves buying a subscription, and you must cancel the service by the 10th of the month to avoid being charged for the subsequent month.
If you only need your Deutschland Ticket for that single week in February, you would need to buy your ticket by midnight on the 10th of February and cancel the subscription immediately.
Your ticket will remain valid for the rest of the month, as the cancellation simply means it will not automatically extend on the 1st of the following month.
Because of this quirk, it’s better for foreign visitors to buy a Deutschland Ticket for a single month from Germany Transit Pass, as this website allows you to choose the option of “immediate termination” rather than the “usual monthly subscription”.
I’ve used this website before to buy a Deutschland Ticket and can confirm it works perfectly, although you’re still well-advised to double-check that the pass you bought does indeed terminate at the end of the month and is not set on a monthly subscription basis.

Buy a Deutschland ticket for a few days
Interestingly, it’s now also possible to buy a Deutschland Ticket for a single day or just a few days while being charged pro rata instead of a full month.
This means you can, for example, order a Deutschland Ticket for a single day for just €1.93, for two days for €3.87, or for four days for €7.73!
There is just one single vendor (as far as I know) that allows you to do this: The Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV), the Hamburg Transport Association.

How to get a Deutschland ticket for just a day
To buy a Deutschland Ticket for a single day or just a few days at a rate of €1.93 per day, you must download the HVV Switch App from the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store.
Although it’s a minor annoyance having to use the app, at least it’s available in English as well as German, making it pretty straightforward to use.
After downloading the app and creating an HVV account, you can use it to buy various transport tickets within the greater Hamburg area, as well as a Deutschland Ticket.
You can then select the starting date for your Deutschland Ticket, with the HVV app noting that the “1st month is charged pro rata”, meaning you pay only the proportional rate based on how many days of the first month you require the pass, rather than the full €58.
Indeed, when we set the starting date to the last day of February, the 28th, we only have to pay €1.93, which grants us a single day of unlimited travel on regional and local trains, as well as all other public transport across Germany!

Caveats
Although it’s great that you can now pay for a single day of unlimited travel on regional and local trains, as well as other public transport in Germany, there are some caveats.
The pro rata option for your Deutschland Ticket is only valid for consecutive days at the end of the month.
For example, while you can buy a Deutschland Ticket for just the 31st of March, or from the 26th to the 31st of March and pay pro rata, it’s not possible to do so for travel between the 17th and 24th of March.
In this case, you have no choice but to buy a Deutschland Ticket for 15 days, from the 17th to the 31st of March, which will still be cheaper than paying the full €58 for the month.
Also, remember that the HVV app sells the Deutschland Ticket as a subscription, so if you don’t cancel before midnight on the 10th of each month, you’ll be charged the full €58 for the following month.
For example, if you need four days of unlimited travel across Germany between the 28th and 31st of March, you must buy (and immediately cancel the subscription) by the 10th of March.
Some advance planning is essential, and this trick therefore works better for those who book a few weeks ahead rather than for those planning a last-minute trip at the end of the month, given that in such a case it will be too late to cancel the subscription in time.

Conclusion
The Deutschland Ticket, a monthly pass that allows travel on nearly all of Germany’s regional and local trains, as well as other public transport, is now also available per day as well.
Instead of paying the full €58 for a month-long Deutschland Ticket, you can now pay as little as €1.93 per day by buying the ticket through the HVV Switch App of the Hamburg Transport Association.
Although the Deutschland Ticket is an excellent deal even at the full monthly price, this option can help you save even more when you need to travel through Germany.
However, there are some caveats to be aware of, as a Deutschland Ticket for just a few days, charged pro rata instead of the full €58 per month, only works for consecutive days towards the end of the month and only if you buy it by the 10th of each month and immediately cancel the subscription.
