TokyoTreat Snack Box: Taste Japan Without Having to Travel There
Recently, I had the chance to try a TokyoTreat snack box, filled with authentic and quirky Japanese snacks and other delicacies you can normally only get as souvenir when you travel to Japan.
Tasting all these quirky yet absolutely delicious snacks brought back fond memories of my own trip to Tokyo a few years ago.
If you’ve travelled to Japan and miss the unique yet tasty snacks from the Land of the Rising Sun, or if you’re an ardent fan of Japanese culture wanting a taste of the country from the comfort of your home, TokyoTreat snack boxes could make a great gift for yourself or friends.
What is TokyoTreat?
TokyoTreat is a snack subscription box offered by the Tokyo-based company ICHIGO Inc., featuring exclusive, limited-edition Japanese snacks.
In addition to the TokyoTreat snack box, the company also offers the Sakuraco snack box, with a different assortment of Japanese snacks and gifts.
The main difference between these two snack boxes is that TokyoTreat boxes generally provide a wider selection of modern sweet and hearty Japanese candies and snacks, while in a Sakuraco box you can find more traditional snacks and teas.
If you love dagashi (mass-market sweets and snacks, such as uniquely flavoured KitKats) or distinctive Japanese sodas, and are interested in modern Japanese popular culture, then TokyoTreat is the box for you.
However, if you prefer teas and traditional, more artisanal snacks like wagashi and are more interested in centuries-old Japanese culture, then Sakuraco may be the better choice, broadly speaking.
Both TokyoTreat and Sakuraco operate as a snack subscription service, delivering a different box full of unique Japanese snacks to your doorstep each month.
If you didn’t stock up on Japanese snacks and souvenirs during your travels to Japan, or already miss those unique and delicious treats, these snack boxes are a great option if you’re into Japanese food and culture.
After all, as you may have discovered, it’s nearly impossible to find these unique snacks outside of Japan, and TokyoTreat provides a convenient way to gather a wide assortment of snacks and send them straight from Tokyo to your home.
Unpacking my TokyoTreat snack box
Full disclosure: I received a Japanese snack box free of charge from TokyoTreat, but the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
It was certainly a great moment to finally receive the box at home, and I quickly began unpacking it to discover the goodies inside. Each month, the box contains a different assortment of snacks, often centred around a specific theme.
This month’s theme was Halloween, and some of the Japanese candies and snacks in the TokyoTreat box were specifically crafted to reflect the tastes and aesthetics of the autumn season.
The TokyoTreat box also included a postcard and an informative booklet explaining each Japanese snack inside the box, including whether it is suitable for vegetarians and vegans, and whether it contains any allergens.
I also appreciated how the booklet provided specific seasonal travel tips about Japan, including the best places to celebrate Halloween, where to find Halloween-inspired drinks and food, and what typical snacks are served during the festivities.
Tasting the delicious Japanese snacks
Although the box didn’t seem very heavy, it contained a surprisingly large number of different Japanese snacks to try, leaving me more than satisfied with its quantity.
I’ll let the pictures and their captions below speak for themselves.
My favourites were the delicious apple pie-flavoured KitKats, the spicy crackers with their sharp ginger taste, as well as the curry ramen.
It was also great fun to try the powdered Halloween fruit juice potion, which you mix into a glass of water to create an intensely fizzy drink with a striking chemical-blue colour.
Is the TokyoTreat snack box worth it?
Whether the TokyoTreat (or Sakuraco) snack box is worth it is something I can’t answer, as it depends on your individual situation, like how much you crave those unique Japanese snacks and whether you find the subscription to be a good deal.
What I can say is that I certainly enjoyed unpacking my TokyoTreat snack box, as it had a bit of a Christmas-like feeling, not knowing exactly what was inside.
The box contained more snacks than I expected, and there were certainly some delicious Japanese candies and food items among them.
I also really liked the informative booklet that came with the box, as it provided not only more information about the snacks (handy for people like me who don’t know Japanese) but also cultural background and travel tips.
For those who love Japanese culture, snacks, and food but aren’t able to travel frequently to Japan, a TokyoTreat box could be a great treat, as you won’t easily find these items in Europe or the US.
Check the TokyoTreat and Sakuraco websites for the latest snack box subscription deals, including special offers and shipping costs.
Conclusion
TokyoTreat is a snack box filled with unique and delicious Japanese snacks that you can order online as a monthly subscription service.
If you love those quirky Japanese snacks but aren’t able to travel to Japan to buy them yourself, then TokyoTreat can be a great way to get your hands on these unique food items.
