NY Times: Americans and Russians to be Banned From EU This Summer
According to the New York Times, Americans, Brazilians and Russians are among the people who will be banned to enter the EU for holidays this summer.
Ban
European Union (EU) nation states are mulling whether or not to lift the current entry restrictions in place which bans non-EU citizens from entering the block for non-essential travel.
The current restrictions, which count for all 27 EU member states as well as Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, were introduced on 16th March and are in place until 1st July.
Draft plan
There has been a lot of speculation what the EU will decide when it comes to travel after 1st July, as many individual member states already eased entry restrictions and quarantine measures.
However, a draft plan of the EU has reportedly placed the US among with several other notable nations such as Brazil and Russia on a list of countries which will likely still face an entry ban after 1st July.
The New York Times, which has seen the draft plan and was first to report on it, wrote that EU officials are still worried by the infection rate in the three countries.
Acceptable countries
The list of acceptable countries which are likely to be allowed to send tourists to Europe reportedly consists out of nations such as Vietnam, Cuba and even China.
According to the NY Times, there could be “significant economic, cultural and geopolitical ramifications” if Americans are indeed banned from entering the EU over the summer given the deep ties between Europe and the US.
The newspaper mentioned that European officials drafting the new plan told that it is “highly unlikely an exception would be made for the United States”.
Reportedly, the lists of accepted countries and banned countries are based on scientific criteria such as the COVID-19 infection rate and has been kept as “nonpolitical as possible”.
Booking a trip to Europe?
The EU plan has not yet been officially presented and the scoop of the New York Times could therefore not yet be officially confirmed.
According to reports, EU officials will regularly update the list of accepted and banned nationalities during the summer, so a sharp decline in COVID-19 infection rates could see countries being taken off from the blacklist again.
Booking a vacation to the EU this summer seems however fraught with risks if you come, so Americans, Brazilians and Russians are certainly well-advised to take extreme caution with advance bookings.
