Luxembourg Makes Public Transport Free For All

Travellers visiting Luxembourg can now look forward to exploring the country without having to pay a penny as the government made the entire public transport system free for all.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg, a tiny EU nation wedged in between its larger neighbours of France, Germany and Belgium, already decided upon the remarkable move in 2019.

Tomorrow on 1st March, the measure will go into effect, meaning that both local citizens as well as visiting tourists will not have to pay for using a train, bus or tram in the country.

First class

Train ticket prices have also be reassessed for those who need to travel between Luxembourg and one of the neighbouring countries.

These people now automatically pay only the distance travelled on foreign tracks, with the Luxembourgian portion being added for free within the fare.

Free travel within Luxembourg is only valid in 2nd class – a 1st class train ticket still commands a slight premium.

Tourism

Even though the measure is mostly meant to entice local citizens to use public transport and to reduce traffic in and around Luxembourg City, it is also a great opportunity for tourists to explore the country.

Luxembourg always had very affordable public transport fares – but free and ticketless travel makes it now much more easy.

Countryside

From Luxembourg City, tourists can head out to the Moselle Valley to sample some crisp Riesling or Gewürztraminer wines.

Or head to some of the charming towns dotted throughout the country such as Diekirch, Echternach and Vianden – which even has a gorgeous castle set high on a hill above the River Our.

Those who are fond of the nature can also explore a wide array of destinations. Why not take a hike in the Mullerthal, an area known as ‘Little Switzerland’.
